One of the reasons that city folk tend to be a bit more progressive than the bumpkins of this world is that the injustices of our little nation come into sharp focus in the city. Most people know who we are talking about when the name Laci Peterson comes up. She even gets a website that upon scrolling down features a picture of the family with President Bush signing some legislation spurned on by Laci's murder. Well, how many of you have heard of Greshanda WIlliams. Probably nobody. Greshandra was a honor student at West Oakland High who was killed wednesday night by some stray assualt weapons fire. As a matter of fact, I think she is the third bystander killed in West Oakland in the less than two weeks I've lived here. But no nation wide furuor over her death or any of the others because they all happen to be black. Like Sudanese farmers, people don't seem to care about black people dying. Not enough at least to do anything about it, or even consider lives like Greshandra's important enough to argue for the continuation of the assualt weapons ban. This type of experience has to be one of the reasons our nation's vote is so split between urban and rural realities. Now if someone could explain to me why people in Arkansas fear terrorism.
